✦ Synopsis


A two-dimensional non-newtonian numerical analysis on the solidification of Al-4mass%Fe droplet was represented which includes the transition between the partitionless and partitioned solidification modes. It was shown that, instead of the banded-structure formation, a strong instability on the macroscopic solid-liquid interface occurs in the transition range. The patterns predicted as functions of the initial undercooling and the droplet size were compared with the microstructures of the gas-atomized A1-4mass%Fe powders.
