โฆ Synopsis
A range of instruments have been available for several years for use in the analysis of the spectra of gases and liquids. This paper describes recent work in the area of microprocessor enhancement of those machines. It examines, in particular, an application involving the quadrupole mass spectrometer and contrasts this design with the type of approach needed for the development of microprocessor-based absorption spectrometers. It also discusses the software requirements of these systems for the analysis of spectra, i.e. recognition of unknown compounds. Such programs must often be used in an online control environment where a rapid response is important. This paper looks at some of the arithmetic processing options available. In addition, the problems of providing easy calibration facilities and user-friendly interfaces are also assessed.
