β¦ Synopsis
The literature on microbial desulphurization of coal is reviewed so as to provide a compilation of the scattered information available on the salient features of this biogenic process. The review discusses, in turn, the types of microorganisms involved in coal desulphurization, the chemistry of the biogenic leaching process including the role of the microbes in catalyzing the leaching reactions of sulphur, pyrite and other metal sulphides associated with coal, previous studies and the parameters affecting microbiological desulphurization of coal.
