โฆ Synopsis
electric potential generated in cells of martensitic and diffusion product for zirconium and for t,itanium. In each of these cells, the much smaller e.m.f. generated corresponds approximately to t'he depression of :M, below To. Rather than become involved in the validity of the meaning of "free energy" in martensit,i~ processes, we would prefer to state our case in this way : t.he electric potential generated by the appropriate cell with electrodes of Inart, ensiti~ and diffusion product appears t,o be directly related to the depression of M,7 below T,.
(4) We do not appreciate the validity of this comment, for the system that Radcliffe et al. suggest has imposed upon it a rather complica~d factor of deformation-whose magnitude in terms of applied energy is not quantitat, ively stated.
(5) We have only been able to st,udy abstracts of the papers by Scheil et al. These indicate that the range of alloys investigated (O-25% Ni) might involve a massive, rather than a diffusion transformation. We must, however, reserve our opinion until we have studied the papers. K.. P. SINCH
