✦ Synopsis

This study discusses Michel Meyer's philosophy of problematology, and shows how it constitutes an important step in the development of a new theory of argument. Problematology, it is noted, focuses on the role of language in human actionparticularly the questioning process. When applied to a theory of argument, problematology, with its emphasis on questions rather than on answers, contributes to our understanding of the nature and use of informal reasoning and of the shortcomings of the propositional model in discourse.
