✦ Synopsis
Abstract
Zone‐free mouse eggs were fertilized in vitro very small numbers of randomly selected sperm that had been capacitated in vitro (5–10 sperm per egg). The resulting embryos developed to the blastocyst stage in vitro, and gave rise to progeny after transfer to recipient foster mothers. Under similar conditions zone‐intact eggs were not fertilized. These data support the view that most sperm are genetically and physiologically competent to fertilize an egg, provided that they can gain access to its surface.
