Mg 15 Ir 5 Si 2 (tetragonal, P4 2 /n, a ϭ 1371.7(1) pm, c ϭ 873.0(2) pm, Zϭ4, 1497 reflections, 103 parameters, R1 ϭ 0.048) was prepared by reaction of the elements at 900 °C in sealed tantalum ampoules. The compound is the silicide with the highest alkaline earth metal content known so far. It is the first example of a silicide with an isolated transition metal silicon building group
