Soluble s y n t h e t i c polymers w i l l o n l y be u s e f u l a s drug c a r r i e r s , i f methods can be devised f o r t a r g e t i n g them t o s p e c i f i c c e l l types. Two approaches a r e c u r r e n t l y being i n v e s t i g a t e d . F i r s t l y , t h e i n c o r p o r a t i o n of s p e c i f i c r e s i d u e s such a s g a l a c t o sm i n e i n t o N-(2-hydroxypropy1)methacrylamide copolymers h a s been shown t o enhance g r e a t l y p i n o c y t i c c a p t u r e by l i v e r cells. Secondly, a n t i b o d i e s have been e v a l u a t e d a s a more u n i v e r s a l a d d r e s s system. Binding r a t IgG t o N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide copolymers i n c r e a s e d t h e i r r a t e o f uptake by r a t v i s c e r a l y o l k s a c s c u l t u r e d i n v i t r o and simultaneously enhanced their r a t e of e x o c y t o s i s .
