Four new a-hydroxy derivatives related to methionine were prepared and tested for resistance to in uitro destruction by rumen microorganisms. 3-Hydroxydihydro-2(3H)-thiophenone was rapidly degraded by the microorganisms while its benzoate ester, 3-benzoyloxydihydro-2(3H)-thiophenone, escaped destruction as indicated by specific GLC analysis for the compounds.
