✦ Synopsis


Thomas Griffith Taylor ('Griff') was primarily a geographer, becoming the first profe ssor of the subject in Australia and Canada. He started work as a physiographer for the Commonwealth of Australia Weather Service, studying the effect of the weather and climate on the landscape. He was a member of Scott's Antarctic Expedition in 1910/1911. He also published many books and papers. His ideas on environmental determinism, the theory that people are shaped by their physical surroundings, were somewhat controversial.
