✦ Synopsis

A metastable state is defined by the spatial phase configuration of a pinned charge-density wave (CDW) and can be changed by varying the field or the temperature. Normally one associates metastable states with hysteresis in the static properties of the CDW, however, in Ko.30MoO 3 at low temperature the evolution to dynamic equilibrium is very slow, making the CDW dynamics a function of the sample history. This results in a number of unusual phenomena. One example is a pulse duration memory effect which occurs in the transient voltage oscillations seen after the CDW is depinned with a pulse. Further data on the interplay between the pinned state and CDW dynamics have been obtained from measurements of ~(~0) as a function of the starting metastable state.

MSssbauer studies have been performed between 6 K and 300 K on single crystals of 57Fe-doped K0.30MoO 3. The spectra show three doublets. Two of them (B and C) are assigned to 57Fe substituted on the K sites. A strong line broadening below 120 K indicates that the Fe impurities are strong pinning ce
