✦ Synopsis
This patent is concerned with forming a gas impermeable joint (12) in a fluid system. It is intended for application such as vehicle fuel filling pipes, to reduce emissions through permeation, and building heating systems to reduce oxygenation of the hot water. The tube ( 14) has a metallic barrier layer (18) between inner and outer plastic layers (20, 22).The plastic pipe layers are forced into contact with plastic surfaces (32, 34) of the fitting ( 16). At least one of the pipe layers is welded to the fitting. The welding may include: spin welding, hot plate, vibration or ultrasonic. The metallic barrier layer (18) extends substantially into the component ( 16), thus improving the gas impermeability of the joint.
