โฆ Synopsis
Garlock Sealing technologies has announced the development of a new metal-to-metal sealing concept that permits service temperatures of 1000ยฐC to be achieved with low seating loads.
The development of the Ultraseal was featured in the April edition of Sealing Technology. The seal construction is based around a graphite core that provides the spring-back and deflection properties as well as an ability to withstand temperatures beyond 1000ยฐC. Two metal cups moving axially relative to one another during seal compression control the die-formed graphite ring.
The graphite ring and metal cup assembly is encapsulated by hermetically laser-welding to prevent any risk of high-temperature oxidation. The whole assembly is then sealed with an envelope of the actual metal sealing material, depending on the application. Ridges machined on the external face of the spring metal cups act through the sealing envelope to concentrate the seating load over a limited contact area to provide the sealing stress.
