✦ Synopsis

Abstract

One‐step in situ oxidations of 2,9‐dimethyl‐1,10‐phenanthroline to 9‐methyl‐1,10‐phenanthroline‐2‐carboxylic acid and 1,10‐phenanthroline‐2,9‐dicarboxylic acid were carried out by utilizing HNO~3~ as the oxidant in the presence of Cu^II^, Ni^II^, and Cu^II^–Ln^III^ salts under hydrothermal conditions, showing that different transition‐metal ions can tune the oxidation products through different coordination modes in metal complexes of the in situ formed ligands.
