✦ Synopsis

Abstractz The rearrangement of 5-oxo-4~xaspim[2.3)hexanes (cyclopmpanesp im+lactones) to 2(5H)-furanones and 2(3H)-fiuanones is shown to be a general reaction which is promoted by metal cata&3ta. A mechanism is pqnxed, involving the novel insertion of a metal specks into the 0-Cp bond of the p-lactose ring, which explains the basic fixtures of the reaction, including its regios&ctivity.
