✦ Synopsis


The experiments described were performed in order to measure the relative transition probabilities of a number of mercury lines, according to the photographic photometric method. The light source was a direct current arc-between a copper and a carbon electrode in air at atmospheric pressure into which mercury was introduced.

The temperature of the arc gas amounted to 5500-6000°K. It was determined from the spectrum of the CN molecule, which is simultaneously emitted by the arc.

As in an arc of this kind, under suitable conditions, the mercury atoms in the various excited states have a B o 1 t z m a n n distribution, the relative populations of these levels are known. The transition probabilities can be calculated from these populations and the measured intensity ratios of the lines.
