First of all, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the SCHWEIZERISCHE CHEMISCHE GESELLSCHAFT for presenting the WERNER Medal to me, and for the great honor which they have thus conferred upon me. No chemist, especially an inorganic chemist, could be more highly honored than to receive a medal bearing ALFRED WERNER'S name.
As I accept this great honor for which you have selected me, I cannot help but wonder whether I am, indeed, the person who is best qualified to receive it. I accept it with humility and with the knowledge that it is not the culmination of my career, but an incentive to further effort. It still remains for me to demonstrate that I am worthy of it. Thus, the WERNER Medal is a great inspiration to me, and it carries a responsibility which I hope that I can fully justify.
Almost all of the research papers which I have written have been the result of collaborative effort with my students -undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral. I am greatly indebted to them, and am glad to have this opportunity to acknowledge my gratitude to them. I am sure that they feel honored, as I do.
