โœฆ Synopsis

Message from the program chairs

This special issue of the Performance Evaluation journal contains the proceedings of Performance 2010, which took place in Namur, Belgium on November 17-19, 2010. Performance is the flagship conference of IFIP's working group (WG) 7.3 and provides a leading international forum for high-quality research on the modeling, analysis, simulation, and evaluation of computer and communication systems.

We are extremely pleased with the strong technical program for the conference, represented by the papers in these proceedings. As usual, the conference program covers a wide range of topics, including computer architecture, data communication systems, I/O systems, peer-to-peer networks, performance modeling techniques, queuing and scheduling theory, simulation methodology, stochastic networks, storage devices, TCP/IP, telecommunications, Web-based systems, and wireless networks. There is also an emerging new interesting and challenging theme on energy management in largescale information systems.

This volume is the culmination of a lot of work by the technical program committee. We received 98 pre-registered abstracts this year, from which 78 materialized as full papers for the review process. A total of 322 reviews were received during the reviewing period. Most of the reviews came from our 42 technical program committee members, with a few expert reviews solicited from external referees as well. The PC meeting took place in Amsterdam on June 25-26, 2010. As a result of this meeting, 20 full papers were selected for the conference program, representing an acceptance rate of 26%. An additional 10 papers were recommended for the poster session at the conference. There were 6 papers identified as candidates for paper awards. Award selections were handled by a subset of the program committee, with the awards announced at the conference itself.

Many people have helped make Performance 2010 a success. Guy Latouche and Marie-Ange Remiche provided leadership and direction from the General Chair position, while their team handled Web presence, publicity, proceedings production, finances, registration, on-site logistics, and more. Philippe Nain and Edmundo de Souza e Silva provided valuable advice on behalf of IFIP WG 7.3. Ben Groot and Terence Robinson provided support for the HotCRP system at the University of Calgary. Ida Delponte took care of the local arrangements for the PC meeting, which was kindly hosted by Nico van Dijk at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Amsterdam. We must also thank all the authors for submitting their work, as well as all the PC members and referees for their timely assistance in the paper selection process. It is your efforts that make this wonderful conference possible.

Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the sponsoring organisations: ACM Sigmetrics, the Computer Performance Foundation, FRS-FNRS, and FWO-Vlaanderen. Their expression of interest in our field of scientific research, and the support they offered, are deeply appreciated.

We hope you enjoy Performance 2010!

## Message from the Chair Oh, the good old days-the days when life was simpler. The days when we didn't have to worry about all those safety warnings. The days when we didn't have to put on all that safety equipment. No MSDSs. No chemical hygiene plans. No computers or computer-assisted equipment.
