The photochemistry of spirooxazines I and II was examined using laser flash photolysis techniques. Both compounds lead to the formation of a strongly absorbing and long-lived, ring-opened photomerocyanine (PMC). In non-polar solvents the PMCs undergo photoisomerization induced by visible light irrad
