Abstract
The spate of accounting and financial reporting scandals in recent years has challenged businesses, auditors, directors, and accounting regulators to take a much broader perspective in evaluating and reporting on risk. The Sarbanes‐Oxley (SOX) legislation in the United States was an attempt to address the problems by requiring enterprises to assess their risks. This article examines the eventful life of an entrepreneurial, publicly traded U.S. telecom venture, including its efforts to support the “strategic enterprise” perspective. It points out the dangers when this perspective is ignored. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
