Objectives: To highlight the issues in maintaining adequate numbers of psychiatrists in “provincial” areas of New Zealand and look at alternative approaches to resolve the shortage of psychiatrists in these areas.

Conclusions: The current strategy in addressing this issue is not working. An alternative approach would be to offer different incentives to psychiatrists to settle in provincial areas. These incentives could be monetary or the opportunity to obtain full registration to work as a specialist in New Zealand. The College needs to drive any changes in strategy.
