May I first of all say what a great pleasure and privilege it is for me to be addressing you on this occasion. I am most grateful to the hospital for the occasion itself and I am most sensible of the honour that you thus do my father. I have been asked to give you some memories of him. That, in one sense, should be easy; and yet it is not, I think, quite so easy to give you a truly rounded and balanced picture of one whose talents and interests were of many kinds. It is easier, in fact, to speak of the times and circumstances through which he lived, and these in any case are not unrelated to his life and work.
