is financed by a foundation consisting of 11 industries and the Swedish Board for Technical Development (STU) on a fifty-fifty basis . Several pilot plants are available, some of which are transportable for field tests. Experimental investigations performed up till now are mainly in the following fields : dairy projects, dewatering of liquid foods, effluent treatment and water purification . Basic research is mainly devoted to concentration polarization .studies. Institutional research and development in the membrane field started in Sweden in 1970 at. the Lund Institute of Technology . A membrane technology group of about six has been formed by the Divisions of Chemical Engineering and Food Engineering . The unit operations of reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration are studied from a chemical engineering viewpoint, and only little attention has been paid to membrane manufacture-Already from the start the work has been devoted to both basic research and to practical, industrial problems, the latter resulting originally
