Abstract
A new technique is described for the extraction and purification of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) from human tumors.
This method involves the use of lithium diiodosalicylate for dissociation of the antigen‐membrane complex. The method differs from earlier procedures in that extraction conditions do not rely on an acid precipitation step and that the yield of CEA appears to be approximately 10‐fold greater.
A glycoprotein immunologically similar to CEA was isolated from non‐tumoral human adult colonic mucosa, suggesting that the difference between tumoral and non‐tumoral tissues in this system may be quantitative rather than absolute.
