The pineal gland releases melatonin into the blood stream in response to sympathetic noradrenergic stimulation of pinealocytes. This process is inhibited by light via the retino-hypothalamic-pineal pathway. Hence melatonin is predominantly released in darkness. Because serotonin is a precursor of me
