✦ Synopsis

Twelve cases of megacolon are reported in this paper. Detailed investigation particularly regarding the function of the rectum and anal sphincter was undertaken in 10 of the cases.

MODE OF INVESTIGATION

A thorough history and clinical examination was made, taking particular note of the anal sphincteric tonus. Sigmoidoscopy was carried out and a rectal biopsy was taken, which included the submucosa and as much as possible of the muscularis.
