and between which, in chronological order were displayed the names of Frank's associates through the entire period of his academic career. The evening was concluded by a witty and nostalgic contribution by the Guest of Honour.
The following morning, despite the previous late night, the scientific meeting resumed promptly with a further full day of scientific presentations. A total of 13 papers were given before Professor Stone was invited to have the last word: "The Relevance of Solid State Chemistry for Heterogeneous Catalysis on Oxides -Retrospect and Prospect" -during which he highlighted the major developments in catalysis that have happened during his career. It was a poignant moment when he concluded his speech greeted by tremendous and lasting applause which left no-one unaffected by the occasion, The weather throughout the meeting had been perfect, even in the opinion of visitors from the Mediterranean countries, Numerous aspects of the occasion were captured on film by Philip Barnes, including an open-air group photograph. The events in Bath were followed by an evening reception in the Link-Block Lounge of the Department of Chemistry at Bristol University, attended by some delegates from Bath, but mainly by staff, and former colleagues, at Bristol. A short speech of welcome by Professor Douglas Everett was followed by a presentation of a spirit decanter, by D.F. Klemperer on behalf of the Bristol staff. This decanter, also in Bristol Blue Glass, had been engraved with the three gold emblems of the University of Princeton, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Bristol, in recognition of Professor Stone's associations with those seats of learning. After two magnificent days, delegates departed to the "four corners of the world", well satisfied that Professor Stone's retirement from academic life had been achieved in a manner befitting his contributions to science, scholarship and the promotion of international friendship. The scientific proceedings are to appear in a volume of the Faraday Transactions of the Royal Society of Chemistry
