โฆ Synopsis
Since antiquity, the Greeks, Romans, and Hindus recognized the medicinal properties of oleander as a cardiotonic and suicidal agent. 1 The early Greeks considered the oleander plant poisonous to " all four -footed beasts. " 2 Preparations of oleander have been used as rodenticides and insecticides as well as remedies for indigestion, malaria, and venereal disease. The most commonly mentioned folk use was as an abortifacient. The Chinese used oleander extract for the treatment of mental disorders. Oleander extracts (Oleander Perpurat, Knoll) were treatments for heart failure and atrial fi brillation. African arrow poisons often contained cardenolides (ouabain, acolongifl oroside K, acovenoside A) obtained from the wood and roots of other species of the dogbane (Apocynaceae) family including the genus Carissa ( Acokanthera ). 3,
