This perioperative book consists of 21 chapters and eight appendixes. This is a second edition; the first was published in 1992. The purpose is to provide essential information on the perioperative care of patients with various medical conditions and frequently encountered problems. Providers of perioperative care such as surgeons, medical consultants, and anesthesiologists are the intended audience. The chapter contents range from responsibilities of a medical consultant to specific topics such as preoperative testing, antibiotic prophylaxis, nutritional support, and chapters dedicated to patients with specific medical problems. The chapters on psychiatry and rheumatology are new to this edition. At the end of the book are eight appendixes presented in outline format in which a number of common surgical procedures, anesthetic needs, transfusion requirements, postoperative complications, and special considerations are described. Each chapter is divided into well-defined sections. Even though the reference list at the end of each chapter is not extensive, good representation of key articles on each topic can be found. Additional summary tables or figures would help the reader identify the most important information in each section or chapter. Several topics that would have been reasonable to include in the second edition are acute postoperative pain management, care of patients who have received organ transplants, and perioperative use of alternative medicine. The information provided reflects topics that are covered in larger reference texts. Essential information for effective perioperative care of the surgical patient is covered in condensed easy-to-read chapters.
