Books are facing threats from new electronic media, yet the number of new medical books published continues unabatedโ3657 released in 1995 in the UK. Books are changing and publishers are innovating with new formats, often linked in with new media such as CDโROM. New technology has made publishing faster and cheaper using deskโtop publishing techniques. The ending of fixed prices for books, with the demise of the Net Book Agreement, adds a further uncertainty to the future of the book. This paper examines the threats and the opportunities, and predicts that the book will survive and prosper.
