Abmtract-This paper couarus a study of the mechanisms and rate controlling procsw, in cu-Al singk crystals subjaztal to large deformations. Particular attention was paid to the nature of 8har bands 8nd their role in aystd hardening It was found that formation of shear bands is pmcedal by a structural softening process. which results from the change of deformation path.
