Simple Hammett studies, hydrogen isotope effects, and attempted preparation of proposed transient intermediates are used to probe the mechanism of oxidation of alcohols by 2,2,6,6_tetramethylpiperidine nitrosonium ion.

The oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones with 2,2,6,6-_ztramethylpiperidine nitrosonium cation (l)l has been developed as a synthesis method by several groups, 2-5 but little is known about the mechanism.
