✦ Synopsis

In a monolayer assembly of appropriate dyes, sensitizer S and acceptor A. the influence of A on the fluorescence and phosphorescence of S has been investigated. The lowest vibronic level of the excited singlet state of S is depopillated by energy transfer to A. If this level is responsible for the singlet-triplet transition, the phosphorescence should be quenched by A; if the intersystem crossing occurs at a higher vibronic level, A should not influence the phosphorescence. Both paths are found to be of similar importance for the deactivation of the dye molecule.
