Mechanical seals help meet ATEX requirements

T he use of purpose designed seals may be required to comply with ATEX requirements when operating in hazardous dusty environments, and FTL Seals are offering assistance to evaluate the use of specialist Meco seals designed for such applications.

To meet ATEX requirements it is important that end users work in partnership with seal manufacturers and in order to conform, many organizations will need to carry out risk assessments on the hazardous operations at a site. It may for instance no longer be possible to use compression packing in some situations. It is necessary to ensure the correct seal is specified for the environment in which it is to be used. The MECO seal is designed and manufactured to suit individual customer applications and so all the necessary considerations can be taken at the design stage to ensure they meet with ATEX directives. This can include reduction in heat generated at the seal faces and the amount of air born particles. Further benefits can also be noted in other components in close proximity, for example, prevention of bearing failure, which is also identified as a possible ignition source.
