โฆ Synopsis
Mechanical properties of engineering ceramics are conventionally determined using test-pieces specially made for the purpose. Since the distribution of both internal and-surface defects varies according to the method of manufacture, there is a risk that test-piece data will not be representative of the properties of fabricated components: Statistical extrapolation techniques may therefore not be valid for critical design purposes in which estimates of the risk of failure are made. This paper reviews the problem, and attempts to judge the usefulness of test-piece data for both quality control and design purposes. Developments in standardised mechanical testing are discussed. The advantages and difficulties of component testing, including overload proof-testing, are described.
