โฆ Synopsis
Measurements of wind velocities in an urban street canyon with a height-to-width ratio of about I.4 were made when ambient winds aloft were approximately perpendicular to the street. The mean wind velocities were determined by analysis of trajectories of tteCer balloons that were rekased in the canyon and phot~p~ in rapid sequence. The trajectories indite the presence of a primary vortex c&l within the canyon, provided the ambient wind velocity exceeds i.S-Wms-'. Measurements with hot-wire anemometers suggest that vehicular t&c at the street level is signikant in increasing turbulena up to heights of approximately 7 m.

A method using balloons as tracers for measuring mean wind velocity in street canyons or mountain valleys has been developed. Tests of the method with numerical experiments showed that the method reproduced an assumed wind field quite well provided that the buoyancy component of the balloon velocity
