✦ Synopsis

This paper presents the results of fullacale 6res in two private motor vehicles conducted under instrameated calorimeter hoods for the Channel Tunnel Safety Unit, Department of Transport. Measurements of beat release rate, temperatures and other parameters of fire severity are given. The results were used for the amesment of the specffition and design of the shuttle wagons and in the subsequent computer modelling alealptiow to analyse the impact of such a lire witbin a shuttle wagon. The fires were well ventilated and allowed to develop f d y before 6refigbthg intervention. Of the two tests the first b d for 17 min with the gas temperature in the rig reaching 1250"~ and with a peak total beat output of at least 7; MW before bepg extinguished be otber burned for 57 mia, witb gas temperatures reaching 1125Β°C and a peak beat output of 45 MW.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

The parameters identified above are those that are now recognized by the fire safety community as being of primary importance in assessing the fire performance of materials and assemblies of materials. Although the behaviour of individual materials can be determined by 0 (British) Crown copyright 1995.
