This paper describes an investigation of the effect of cross winds on train dynamic systems. It considers the nature of the fluctuating cross wind and how such cross winds produce fluctuating forces. A simple method for calculating the wind time history at the position of a moving vehicle is firstly

β¦ Synopsis
The results of full-scale and wind tunnel experiments to measure the cross wind time averaged and unsteady forces and moments on trains are presented. The results demonstrate good agreement between the two sets of experiments but also illustrate the need for care in simulating local roughness effects in the wind tunnel simulation. It is also shown that quasisteady effects need to be taken into account when calculating force and moment aerodynamic admittances.

In this work a numerical-experimental procedure for the aerodynamic optimisation of the new train AnsaldoBreda EMUV250 in terms of behaviour to cross wind, will be presented. The first step of the research consists in evaluating the aerodynamic forces acting on the original geometry of the train by
