โฆ Synopsis
A flowing &e&low apparatus has been used to measure the cross section for Penning ionization of hvdrogen atoms by helium ZZ3S metastable atoms at thermal energy. The result was found to be 22 I 6'~ lo-l6 cm2 at 300ยฐK, and protons were identified as the major ion product. A novel method employing argon ions was used to obtain hydrogen atom concentrations.
