โฆ Synopsis
A simple experimental technique was developed for the measurement of velocity profiles of slow flowing, coarse granular materials in mass-flow conical hoppers. The measured profiles were shown to be unaffected by the presence of material surcharge above the cone, independent of material discharge rate, and strongly dependent upon the roughness of the internal walls.

A mathematical model is presented for the solids velocity distribution in mass flow hoppers; it is based on classical plasticity theory. The analytical solutions are in good agreement with the results of experiments performed with sand and organic prills in model hoppers of 0.11 and 0.60 m diameter.
The method of characteristics has been used to predict the exact stress and velocity fields in an incompressible, cohesionless, Coulomb material discharging from a conical hopper for a great variety of boundary conditions imposed on the top surface. It is found that in all cases the stresses and vel
A laser Doppler anemometer was used to measure velocity components for the flow of a Newtonian fluid in a reversing section of a pilot-scale corotating twin-screw extruder. Measurements were made at a fixed axial position in the intemeshing (nip) region and the translational region (away from the ni
