✦ Synopsis
In order to assess the actual load on front teeth and tooth supportive tissue during brass instrument playing, a measun'ng system was developed permitting simultaneous recordings of mouthpiece forces and incisor dejlections. By the applicalion of strain gauges, the mouthpiece itself was ronverted into an extra-oral force Iransdurpr, whilst an intra-oral metal appliance similar to a remouabe partial denture sprued as the base for strain gauge transducers sensing incisor displacements. The measurements only slightly affected Ihe handling of the instruments under examinatinn (trumpet, french horn, tenor horn, and tuba) and yielded the following auvrage results for three to jive plays per instrument: peak force values wplp in the range of 29 N (tuba) to 50 ,V (trumpet), and the re.specliur peak displacemen IS were 43 pm and 100 pm.
