Optical third harmonic generation at 1.904, I.579 and 1.064 pm experiments have been performed on thin films fabricated from side chain polymers containing effectively 4-dialkylamino-nitro-benzene, 4dialkylamino-4'-nitro-atilbene, Cdialkylamino-4' -nitrodiphenylbutadiene, 4dialkylamino4'-nitrodiphenylbexatriene as the side groups. We have measured values of xt3) ( -30; o, w, w) in the range of 0.54x LO-" to 7.42~ lo-l2 esu, at 1.904 Pm incident radiation, which are comparable to the nonresonant values found in fully conjugated back-bone polymers [ 11. The values of x"i at both 1.904 and 1.579 pm change by a factor of 15 as the conjugation lengtb is increased.
