✦ Synopsis
We have measured lhe second hyperpnlariwbility. y. of gaseous benzene nt 514.5 nm with t cw Ar ion laser usin_e the technique of eleclric-fi;ld-induced second-harmonic genrmkn. under periodic phase-matching conditions and by mixing the benzene vnpour with a host gas (Ar or CO:). The use of mixtures allows mcasuremen[ of [he hyperpolariwhilir~ or ~apours of volatile liquids 31 room temperuure and 31 rrcquency regions where the gas under swdy ah.wrbs linearly 3~ the stivond harmonic. Both real and imaginary parts of y xc measured.
