✦ Synopsis
The charactenzation of a chelatmg sihca, modified by couphng ethylenedlamme to a surface-hnked epoxlde, was camed out usmg an unproved mnhydnn-based procedure for the measurement of pnmary ammes, and elemental analysis Whilst the pnmary amme content of model monoammes was accurately assessed, for dlammes m wluch the amme groups were separated by 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms, the number of pnmary amme groups was underestunated Chenucally modtied sdlcas were prepared by actwation of the surface with dtierent Ioaclmgs of an epoxlde modtier, which was m turn coupled to ethylenechamme Elemental analysis and the nmhydnn reaction were used to assess the mvolvement of pnmary amme groups m copper complexatlon by these modlfied slhcas and the degree of bndgmg resulhng from the modticatlon Increasing the quanhty of epoxlde modlfier resulted m an mcreased coverage of eponde groups on the sdlca surface, but whilst this increased the quantity of dtanune that could be coupled onto the surface, mcreased dmmme bnddgmg occurred The copper capacity of the sihca was hnked to the pnmary amme content of the sd~ca and not to Its total nitrogen content Copper complexatlon or chelation by the resm IS therefore more favoured by the hnear mod&c&on than by the bndged form
