β¦ Synopsis
An ultrasound pulse transmission technique was investigated as an alternative means of measuring the specific interfacial area n in gas-liquid reactors. Characterization of gas-liquid dispersions using ultrasound might prove a very valuable alternative in situations in which traditional techniques such as those based on optical principles cannot be applied. In order to calculate LI from the measured pulse amplitude attenuation, sound scattering theory together with a correction procedure has been applied. The ultrasonic pulse transmission measurement was used together with the classical light transmission method in order to measure snecific interfacial areas of UD to 350 m-' in a bubble column. In the range studied, the results of the two methods agreed well.
