✦ Synopsis

A study of the spectral characteristics of the temperature, pressure, heat release and velocity #uctuations associated with combustion oscillations has been carried out in a laboratory dump combustor burning premixed butane and air. The interactions between the di!erent #uctuating variables have been measured. The trends in the relative phases of these parameters and their implication for the driving mechanism and the modelling of thermoacoustic instability are assessed.

Pressure-time variations were measured at six axial locations in a propane-fuelled SNECMA-Lockwood valveless pulsed combustor. Two techniques were used to acquire the data. Sustained oscillations have been observed in continuous cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. These oscillations appear spontaneously under aerobic conditions and may constitute a severe limitation for process control. A method for estimating the standard deviation of velocity within a voxel is proposed. This estimate is based on data collected using a phase-contrast MRI technique. Simulations are presented to characterize the estimate and in vivo data are shown. Several different uses of the estimate are proposed
