Le Dr Goldberg l'a envoyée en vacances dans la maison ronde, au milieu de la forêt, rejoindre quatre locataires, Thomas et Lola, Nora et la docteure Anne. Ils sont chargés en fait de distraire les enfants malades. Et de leur apprendre le monde. Un monde qui ressemble au nôtre. Mais qui n'est pas le nôtre, qui en est prodigieusement distinct et distant, sur une autre « brane ». Ou tout, en réalité, est différent, subtilement ou violemment. Le Dr Goldberg vous expliquera ça.
Encore heureux qu'il y ait le changement, sans lequel la vie ne vaudrait pas d'être vécue.
La langue de ce roman est étrange. Ce n'est pas tout à fait la nôtre. C'est celle d'un autre univers, parallèle si l'on veut, autorisé par la théorie des cordes, et ou les personnages ont la faculté de passer d'un monde à l'autre, voire peut-être de créer des mondes, la faculté de changer.
May le monde est peut-être le monde que la petite May mourante est en train de se créer pour y vivre (qui sait ?) à jamais. Peu de romans de science-fiction sont aussi bouleversants. Aucun n'a jamais été aussi loin dans l'originalité en s'attaquant aux règles même du langage sans jamais sombrer dans l'inintelligibilité ou l'obscurité.
