Le paresseux s'accommode d'une maxime qui le dispense de faire lui-même les observations qui ont mené l'auteur de la maxime au résultat dont il fait part à son lecteur. Le paresseux et l'homme médiocre se croient dispensés d'aller au delà, et donnent à la maxime une généralité que l'auteur, à moins qu'il ne soit lui-même médiocre, ce qui arrive quelquefois, n'a pas prétendu lui donner.
