✦ Synopsis

In this paper, we use the results of a recent paper by Guralnick, Penttila, w Ž .

x Praeger, and Saxl Proc. London Math. Soc. 78 1999 , 167᎐214 to calculate an explicit list of the maximal overgroups of the Singer elements in the finite special linear, general unitary, special unitary, symplectic, and minus type orthogonal groups.

We compute conjugacy classes in maximal parabolic subgroups of the general linear group. This computation proceeds by reducing to a "matrix problem." Such problems involve finding normal forms for matrices under a specified set of row and column operations. We solve the relevant matrix problem in sm

A formation is a class 3 of groups which is closed under homomorphic images and is such that each group G has a unique smallest normal subgroup H with factor group in 5. This uniquely determined normal subgroup of G is called the 8-residual subgroup of G and will be denoted here by G,. The formatio

Let W be a finite Coxeter group and let F be an automorphism of W that leaves the set of generators of W invariant. We establish certain properties of elements of minimal length in the F-conjugacy classes of W that allow us to define character tables for the corresponding twisted Iwahori᎐Hecke algeb
