β¦ Synopsis
Like, there she was, Maureen Danielle "Muffy" Birnbaum-in a cute little ski outfit from L.L. Bean-all set to go barreling down a gorgeous snow-covered mountain in Vermont, when she got this weird feeling inside. Next thing she knew, she was standing stark naked on Mars, up to her ankles in orange grunge.
Grass, for sure! But her longtime best friend, Bitsy Spiegelman, not only listened to that whole outrageous story and all the others, she recorded every one-how Maureen became a High Pricstess for some yucko, English-speaking hairy apes at the Earth's Core (and met a great guy), how she averted world-wide panic when Night Fell for the first time in years on some very sunny distant planet called Lagash (and met a great guy), how she ended up among the Horseclan people fighting a sort of warped replay of the American Civil War 800 years in the future (and met quite a few great guys), etc.
Did Bitsy actually believe Maureen Birnbaum spent all that time in places (and centuries) where there were so many positively super guys and no shopping? No way! But fortunately, she told George Alec Effinger about it.
So here are the extraordinary exploits of a totally cool prep-school senior who became a socially aware (please don't call her Muffy!), usually scantily clad, world-and-time-traveling swordsperson of the first order-and one of Science Fiction's most devastating heroines. I'm sure.
